We already knew the two main actors, Jean-luc Joseph and Vincent Vermignon. They are two very talented and generous french actors. Two great professionals who are very involved. Like us, they also have a certain frustration at not being able to express their talent in France. To always have the same roles on French television for black actors: drug dealer, thug, illegal immigrant ... Like us, it was a dream to shoot in North America with strong roles. It was our American dream, all four of us. We involved them from the very beginning of the writing process. They worked a lot ahead of their characters while we were writing the script.
The two actors had never met before this project. We did everything we could to create a real brotherhood between them.
A few days before shooting, in Canada, we rented a cottage near a lake to be in the conditions of the film. We cut ourselves off from the world and we took the time to concentrate on the necessary emotions. From eight o'clock AM until midnight at night we only talked about the film and their characters. Because we knew that the film's power depended on the characters of the two brothers. This moment was magical and very important because the shooting was very short, very intense and hard both physically and mentally. The weather was also difficult (rain, very cold temperatures at night, etc...).
For the 2 other actors (the policeman and the woman), they are Canadian actors. We found them at the last moment (48 hours before the 1st day of shooting).
Jules Powers, the policeman, did a lot of good on the set. Despite the fact that he spent his time on the floor, tied up and gagged, he was always in a good mood. He was amazing. Without a word, all the emotion was in his eyes...
Like Jules, Danette Mackay was hired 2 days before shooting. After an hour of casting, she was in the adventure too. Both, they had very few time to prepare her role. Danette worked on her American accent and the attitude of her character. Even if her time in the movie is short, she's perfect. The right look, the right amount of fear, the right intensity.
We're really happy with the work we've done with the actors. It's been a huge pleasure working with them.
